MIAMI -- Safety Louis Delmas signed a one-year contract Monday worth up to $3.5 million with the Miami Dolphins, who shook up their secondary on the eve of free agency. Miami also released cornerback Dimitri Patterson on Monday. Patterson was plagued by injuries the past two seasons, and his release frees up more than $5 million in salary cap space for the Dolphins. Delmas spent the past five seasons with the Detroit Lions, who released him last month. Hes expected to replace Chris Clemons, who can become a free agent Tuesday. Delmas started 15 games in 2013 and had a career-high three interceptions. The South Florida native was a second-round draft pick who made 64 starts for the Lions. "He is leader on and off the field and has a proven track record of playmaking that will benefit the entire defensive unit," new Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey said. The Dolphins are expected to be active in free agency beginning Tuesday. Their priority will be to revamp an offensive line that had an awful 2013 both on and off the field, and became the focus of a bullying scandal that sabotaged the season. Guards Richie Incognito and John Jerry, both implicated in the scandal, are among those who become free agents. Neither is likely to return to Miami. The eighth-year coach said he was more upset Saturday with how he learned of Clowneys status. Hes been bothered by a flare-up of bone spurs in his right foot and now has the muscle strain that kept him from a practice last Thursday and again on Monday. Clowneys also been frustrated that South Carolinas defence is not playing as well as it had his first two seasons. He said after a 41-30 loss at Georgia that coaches should move him around more, then said the guys on defence had to improve after giving up most of an 18-point lead in a 28-25 win at UCF. Arkansas coach Bart Bielema hopes Clowneys ready to go for his offence. "As is the case any time that youre in this type of situation, Im sure hes going to play, Bielema said. "I think its competitive nature. Its kind of like when we were getting ready to play A&M. At the beginning of this season, people were taking about him (Manziel) being suspended or not." Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw said Clowneys situation has not created a problem in the locker room. "All I know is Clowneys helped us win a lot of games," he said.
